FMA Drabble: That Word (Roy x Ed, Fluff)

Title: That Word
Pairing: Roy x Ed
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Fluff! Imagine that!
Summary: There were some words Ed hated, and some he didn't think he needed to use.
A/N: Another drabble lost in the shuffle of a spam post. I'M SO SORRY FOR CLOGGING YOUR F-LIST UP. Again, this was quickly done.

That Word



There were a few words Edward Elric, under no circumstances, would allow himself to use. The first set of them involved the words 'give up', or anything using the same concept. The second, 'freak' or 'cripple'.

The third was 'I love you'.

He loved his little brother, of that there was no doubt. And Ed would personally have no issues clocking the bastard that dared even hint otherwise.

Al didn't need to hear those words from him, he knew.

Edward wasn't sure how he felt about Roy Mustang. It was not quite as simple as the pure and uncompromising affection he had for Alphonse, yet...

It shouldn't be love. Sometimes, he and his lover got along horribly. Ed shouted and Roy teased, and both somehow ended up getting their feelings hurt along the way. The Fullmetal Alchemist wouldn't and couldn't stay by the Flame's side, and the Flame Alchemist needed.

The whole thing was a terrible idea and on so many levels. It was likely brought on by loneliness and hormones.

But then Roy would smile at him in a particular way, one Edward never saw him share with anyone else. Or the blond would be exhausted, so close to throwing the book he was researching across the room and just screaming, and somehow his lover knew exactly what to say.

Sometimes Roy would suddenly sit up stick-straight in bed at night, his breath hoarse and rapid. Those lovely dark eyes would stare blindly ahead, opened far too wide. Edward would then lean over and put an arm around the other man's shoulders.

And somehow, it always seemed to help.

Edward sighed and looked over at his lover from his place on Roy's office couch. The older man was reviewing his newest mission report, and though Ed just got back in town he could already tell Roy had pulled a few all-nighters that week. Again.

Roy looked up and met his gaze, then, as if by magic, his shoulders relaxed ever so slightly.

"Hey, I'll go grab you some extra coffee." Ed nodded, and then stood up.

Honestly, there were some words that people just didn't need. They were awkward and messy things, really. Humans were strange like that.

Bringing the hot mug back to his lover, Ed smiled.

There was nothing he needed to say.

That's sweet ^_^ I think it's a very good view of their relationship. Just knowing that they love each other is enough. Both of them being there whent he other needs comfort.

The Fullmetal Alchemist wouldn't and couldn't stay by the Flame's side, and the Flame Alchemist needed.

I always love to see some uncertainty in Ed and Roy's relationship, it just makes it all the nicer when they just admit that they love each other. Even if they don't actually say it. =)

Heh, I probably will continue. I seem unable to resist. I will, however, try to put more work into my drabbles in the future. These quickie-spam-ones were fun, but... *laughs*

I love the relationship, but always figured it was a highly emotional and uncertain one. At least at times. But I'm a sap who believes love conquers all... even if they don't actually SAY they are in love.

Thank you! I really really really like hearing I kept them IC as... well... I really do -try- to keep them IC. I just don't see Ed as a guy who can easily admit his feelings... Roy maybe moreso, but even he is a really secretive guy. Hm.

This is probably my most favorite line/scene in this fic. I can just imagine this happening in RL (and in my head as well), considering the way those two treated each other. ^_^ I never thought of them as the direct-love type of couples. ^__^

I really can't see them as the "I love you!" "Oh, I do too, dear!" type of couple. Hee... in fact, I'm pretty sure I've poked fan at that in at least one crack!drabble. NO OFFENSE to people who can see them doing that and use it in their own fics.

You also do? *hugs you* Well, honestly, with the way those two treat each other, I don't think they would have the courage to tell each other outright how much they love each other except for the 'I hate you' speech. *sweatdrops* In canon, Roy seems to be the one who appears more subtle between the two mainly because it's obvious he cares for Ed (and also Al, but mostly Ed O_o) even though he doesn't say it. XD *add fangirlish squeals here*

Both Ed and Roy are very... interesting... people, IMHO. I think they both tend to repress a lot of things... feelings... because it would cause people to worry, distract them from their goals, and once they start feeling one thing... they probably won't be able to stop. Given some of the horrible things and guilt in their past, that could be very bad.

So I think they'd acknowledge mentally that they care for (and love) each other but neither would dare say it out loud. Plus Ed? I don't seem him being sappy. :D He's such a little jerk. *fond*

Canon!Roy totally cares for Ed, I agree. It's fairly obvious. And he completely does not want Edward and the others to know that.

I think Roy/Ed is one of those complicated pairings (like 1x2x1), given their goal and life (Ed is more occupied in restoring Al's body), but if you look at it closely, it's one of the greatest coupling you would ever get. ^_^ Both Platonic and Friendly love. ^_^

I quite agree! There is an understanding there, I think. Probably because they are so damn similiar... I think they could work very well as a unit, if they'd only let themselves. /rambling
